Early life[]
José was born on 26 January 1963 to a big family in Setúbal, Portugal. His father played football for Os Beleneses and Vitória de Setúbal and he also got one cap for the Portugal national team. The fall of the Estado Novo regime, however left the family with just one small property near Palmela.
